Research On The Phenomenon Of Onomatopoeia Conversion In Modern Chinese

Many non-onomatopoeic words developed from onomatopoeia in modern Chinese consist of an indispensable part of the vocabulary system.The study of onomatopoeia in modern Chinese mainly starts from many aspects of the symbolic nature,part of speech classification,rhetorical effect,etc.,but there is little study on the conversion of onomatopoeia and the expression of non-onomatopoeia.The onomatopoeia conversion is defined as the process of changing the part of speech of onomatopoeia due to the change of syntactic distribution and semantic transfer based on the invariant form of the onomatopoeia.The onomatopoeias are mainly transformed into three categories: nouns,adjectives,and verbs,which form onomatopoeic nouns,onomatopoeic adjectives,and onomatopoeic verbs,respectively.In this paper,the quantitative analysis research method is used to exhaustively collect and sort the onomatopoeic words in the dictionary to form an onomatopoeic word list.The article mainly analyzes each type of onomatopoeia from the three aspects of grammatical characteristics,cognitive basis,and conversion methods,in order to get the general rule and find out the deep motivation behind the onomatopoeia conversion phenomenon.We believe that the fundamental reason for the conversion of onomatopoeia is the cognitive process of metonymy and metaphor.We have constructed a cognitive framework for onomatopoeic vocalization behaviors centered on sounds,with phonation bodies,phonation behaviors,sound characteristics,and sound content as important components according to the process of generating sound in physics.When the non-sound components in the framework gain prominent status,the onomatopoeia has the conditions for conversion.Specifically,the onomatopoeic nouns are formed by "sound refers to the phonation bodies",the onomatopoeic adjectives are formed by "sound to refer to sound characteristics",and the onomatopoeic verbs are formed by "sound to refer to phonation behavior".In addition,the difficulty level of onomatopoeia conversion in different sound domains is different.In the animal sound domain,the ease of formation of onomatopoeia conversion words is: noun > verb >adjective;in the natural sound domain,it is: adjective > verb > noun;In the human voice domain: it is verb > adjective > noun.
