When the conflict stimuli occur in the task,not only the current task would affect by the stimuli but also has impair the reaction time of the later task.The most classical about conflict stimuli and task switching is the study of bivalency effect.The bivalency effect is a block wise slowing of responses that occurs the bivalent stimuli in the task sequence which it causes response slowing on all other trials within the block.the study showed that even the bivalent stimuli not share any features with the tasks in sequence.According to the past studies,there has different conclusion about the relation of bivalent stimuli and bivalency effect,which is the bivalent stimuli is one of essential of the bivalency effect,it brings about different theoretical point of view.Therefore,this study main focus on the theme of the influence about bivalent stimuli and bivalency effect.Experiment one chose 35 college students,using color,numbers and letters as the univalent stimuli while some colored case as bivalent stimuli.by comparing the response times and the accuracy of the three tasks in the mixed block to the univalent block to prove and investigate the bivalency effect.Meanwhile,manipulating the numbers of bivalent stimuli for examine the influence of bivalency effect.the experiment results showed that with the increase of the bivalent’s number that would lead to the decrease of bivalency effect.At the same time,the bivalency effect of the three tasks also is different.Specifically,the trend of the three task’s performance under the influence on the number of bivalent stimuli is different.That is,the bivalency effect of color task is more stubborn and the number task or latter task are more affected by the number of bivalent stimuli.Experiment two recruited 20 college students,using the same material as experiment one,which is the color,numbers and letters composition of univalent block while same colored case as bivalent stimuli,but there has something different that the bivalent stimuli in this study did not need to press any key that is investigate the relation of the stimuli set and the bivalency effect.by comparing the RTs and the accuracy of the univalent stimuli in univalent block and the univalent stimuli in mixed block,and comparing the stimuli in univalent block and the stimuli after bivalent stimuli(N),which its location in N+1 to N+4,that found the bivalency effect still appearing even lack the response press while the persistence of the bivalent stimuli is also not affected by it,that is the influence of bivalent stimuli persistence to the N+3 tasks.In this study,two experiment were carried out show that the conflict of bivalent stimuli is one source of bivalency effect.While the inhibition of conflict stimuli in the task sequence would affect the performance of followed-up tasks,especially the inhibition of irrelevant features of bivalent stimuli,which it reflects the results of cognitive control system could regulation to the cognitive resources according to the requirement of current tasks.
