Nelson Goodman(1906—1998)is a very famous analytical philosopher and aesthetician in the 20 th century.The aesthetic development of the 20 th century is unprecedentedly active.In the context of pluralism,its theory has interdisciplinary characteristics.Goodman made a new analysis and construction of artistic activities in the combination of analytical philosophy,pragmatism and semiotics,and formed a unique artistic semiotics thought.Its theory is original,solves the new problems in the field of art,and promotes the development of modern analytical aesthetics.Therefore,goodman art semiotics has the possibility and necessity to dig deeply.But the domestic attention to its artistic semiotics thought is not enough,in the aesthetic and artistic semiotics domain its thought has been obscured,still needs to arouse the academic attention.Goodman's originality of art semiotics lies in the elucidation of the four theories of art semiotics.These four theories have carried on the general symbol system discussion,has carried on the thorough inquiry to the image,the music and so on non-verbal symbol system.The theory of "artistic generation" explores art from the perspective of symbols: it innovates the theory of reference,reference and predicate,explains the new connotation of reproduction and description,expression and example,and explores the characteristics of artistic symbols from three aspects : " five requirements of notation system "," distinction between autographed art and pen art ",and "truth is not necessarily better than forgery ".The theory of "artistic definition" looks for the essence of art from "five symptoms of aesthetics ",and changes " artistic definition " from " what is art " to " when is art " in due course,which solves the difficult problem of " artistic definition ".The theory of "artistic understanding" holds that aesthetic experience is a kind of cognition,which helps us to understand and understand symbols correctly."Style" also plays a similar role in promoting our understanding of art and the world.The theory of "diverse world" puts forward that "art has the same cognitive function as science ",and discusses the concept of "knowledge ",which brings about the turn of epistemology and the "new interpretation of cognition: understanding ".The thesis mainly focuses on art semiotics,combines the works of chinese translation and goodman's various art activities to carry out research,cross-reference and complement each other,in order to get a comprehensive and specific understanding of art semiotics.Therefore,this paper introduces the research status and significance of this topic in the introduction part.In the first part,three philosophical ideas which have profound influence on Goodman's academic career are sorted out to provide theoretical basis and support for the development of thistopic.The logical analysis and construction of analytical philosophy,the emphasis of pragmatism on pluralistic construction,the connection between semiotics and art are all deeply embodied in Goodman's theory.Since then,this paper has entered the theoretical connotation of Goodman's art semiotics.The theory of "artistic generation" expounds the process of artistic symbol reference and artistic symbol characteristic.The theory of "definition of art" responds to avant-garde art from "five symptoms of aesthetics" and "when art ".The theory of "artistic understanding" explains "aesthetic experience" and "style" as the way of understanding.The author makes a brief review of the development and evolution of both,and studies Goodman's "aesthetic experience and style as a way of understanding ".The theory of "diverse world" is based on the idea of pluralistic construction.A diverse world consists of a variety of methods and tools and there are a variety of truth and test criteria.After that,the discussion of "knowledge" brings the change of epistemology and the new interpretation of cognition.Finally,this paper enters the review part of Goodman's art semiotics.the significance of academic history: first,goodman's creation of "artistic definition" laid the foundation for the theories of Arthur.C.danto(1924—2013)and George Dickie(1926—),and helped to transform the analytic aesthetics backward analysis aesthetics.Secondly,Goodman inherited the thought of Susanne.K.Langer(1895—1982)and further thought and inquiry,and developed the thought of artistic semiotics.Finally,Goodman carried out various artistic activities and inherited the thought of John Dewey(1859—1952),which promoted the development of pragmatism aesthetics.The conclusion part summarizes Goodman's art semiotics.From the theoretical characteristics,theoretical limitations,its theory into the contemporary Chinese academic significance and the significance of contemporary literature and art aesthetic research.Goodman's theory and research methods are instructive to the development of Chinese aesthetics.Academic circles should strengthen the research on this subject.
