In the study of modal problems,Carnap and Hitikka interpret the possible world as a maximal consistent set of sentences. In David Lewis' s opinion, the expression of "maximal consistent set of sentences" contains modality, which cannot explain the possible world.Based on the analysis of counterfactual conditionals,David Lewis made a substantial explanation of the possible world and established his possible-world theory.David Lewis pointed out that the possible world is the existence of entities, and they are composed of parts which are spatiotemporally related. Then,he analyzed the isolation, concreteness, reality and plenitude of the possible world.Facing the criticism of philosophers,David Lewis believes that the possible world is recognizable and distinguished between "possibility" and "reality".In addition,David Lewis criticized linguistic ersatzism?pictorial ersatzism and magical ersatzism, pointed out the problems that existed in the interpretation of possible world,so as to show that his own theory is the only successful attempt of possible-world realism.David Lewis' s possible-world theory has opened up a new path for the study of possibleworld theory, which is a valuable exploration in the study of modal philosophy.Based on this theory,he reduced modal analysis to specific world and individual, which provided a new way for modal analysis. However, this theory is uneconomical in ontology and seriously violates common sense.
