At present,the implementation of quality education is the priority of education reform.However,the main English class reading teaching methods are doing and explaining exercises in the rural middle schools.Therefore,it becomes inevitable to attach importance to extracurricular English reading.In addition,the rural education environment is not good enough compared with the environment in cities.The education and teaching facilities in rural areas are inadequate.The students' parents' educational levels are generally low.The teachers can't keep up with relevant demands.All these factors lead to the English education difficulties in rural middle schools.In particular,the situation of students' extracurricular English reading in rural middle schools is not optimistic.Extracurricular English reading,which plays an important role in improving students' English reading abilities,can not only make students unconsciously increase their vocabulary and speed up their reading,but also help them cultivate their sense of English and improve their English scores.Therefore,in order to thoroughly understand the status quo of extracurricular English reading in rural middle schools,cultivate and improve the students' extracurricular English reading interests and English levels,this thesis takes the students of Fengle Middle School in Sandu Shui Minority Autonomous County of Guizhou Province as the research subject,using the literature review method,interview method,questionnaire method and other methods to explore and analyze the present situation of students' extracurricular English reading in rural middle school.According to the questionnaire and interview survey findings,it is found that students are not clear about the function ofextracurricular English reading,and some students even adopt resistant psychology.The schools and teachers don't pay enough attention to extracurricular English reading.The effect of teachers on students is not obvious.The students do not read enough English after class and their reading time is not enough.They just read few kinds of books.The reading methods need to be changed,and reading strategies and plans need to be made.Through this research,the author believes that to improve the current extracurricular English reading problem in rural middle schools,teachers' teaching philosophy should be changed.The teachers choose appropriate reading materials,making extracurricular English reading plans in advance,guiding the students to form good reading habits,and doing evaluation job well.The teaching resources should be reasonably allocated,and the relevant training should be strengthened to improve the teachers' quality.These strategies can not only solve the extracurricular English reading problems in rural middle schools,but also improve students' extracurricular English reading interests and levels,and provide effective means and methods for English reading teaching practice as well.
