China's Education Modernization 2035,the document printed and issued by the CPC Central Committee and China State Council in 2019,proposes that education should achieve modernization on the whole, but the difficulty and emphasis of realizing the modernization of education is in the countryside, including the county seat which is based on agriculture. At present,China has a population of 1.4 billion, and more than half of the school-age children are in rural areas. Therefore, without the modernization of rural education, there would be no modernization of Chinese education.Since the reform and opening up 40 years ago,China has made great achievements in education. However,it cannot be denied that rural education in China, especially in the poor areas in the west,is still facing many difficulties. As a part of rural education,English education in rural areas attracts much attention.English homework is a necessary extension and supplement of English classroom teaching, which not only affects the quality of teaching, but also plays an important role in cultivating students' comprehensive ability to apply the language. This study took the English homework in rural junior middle school as the point of departure.By using study methods including questionnaire survey, interview, and text analysis etc.,the study has an in-depth survey on their current situation of English homework of 5 rural junior middle schools in districts like Wanzhou,Liangping, and Fengjie.Under the guidance of Humanistic Theory,Zone of Proximal Development and Feedback Theory, this thesis studied the quantity and difficulty, content and form, completion, evaluation and feedback of English homework in rural junior middle schools, found that the current situation of English homework in rural junior middle schools is worrying. For example, the form is too single to meet the individual needs of students in different levels, and reaches the following conclusions:The main problems of English homework in rural junior high schools are as follows:(1)It caused a heavy burden on students;(2)relatively monotonous and lack of innovation in the content and form;(3)over-emphasis on quantity but not quality;(4)inflexible method of evaluation, and no emphasis on feedback. The main causes of the problems are:(1)the influence of educational concepts in tradition;(2)the impact of the exam-oriented system of education;(3)the impact of rural education environment;(4)the heavy pressure on teachers and burden on students;(5)teachers' ignorance on the internal needs of students.Based on the conclusion of this study and according to the actual situation of rural middle schools, the author put forward the following suggestions:(1)a sound control of the amount of homework;(2)enrichment of the content and form of homework;(3)supervision on how students complete homework;(4)update for the concept of homework revision.
