The Analysis Of Semantic Features And Cognitive Mechanism Of The "Kui+XP" Construction

Adverbs of“xingkui”type have attracted attention of many scholars.Among these adverbs,“xingkui”and“duokui”are most commonly studied.The related researches on“kui”are not sufficient.To bridge the gaps of the previous researches,under the framework of Construction Grammar and with the data collected from CCL and BCC corpus,this thesis describes the constituents in the“kui+XP”construction,and its syntactic features.Also,this thesis summarizes the meanings of“kui”and the“kui+XP”construction and the pragmatic functions of this construction and analyzes its cognitive mechanisms.This thesis has two research questions.The first question is what semantic features“kui”and the“kui+XP”construction have?What function and cognitive mechanism the“kui+XP”construction have is the second question.After collecting the corpus data,it is found the structures that appear after“kui”are basically the subject-predicate structures.Among them,two special structures,the“NP+?hai?shiNP”structure and“NP+VPdeC”structure,appear very frequently.The subject in these structures is mostly second person pronoun.Third person pronoun is used less frequently.First person pronoun appears the least frequently.The meanings of“kui”,can be divided into“kui₁”,“kui₂”,and“kui₃”.The meaning of“kui₁”is similar to that of“xingkui”or“duokui”.The“kui₁+XP”construction has four semantic elements.The structure after“kui”is the third element,expressing favorable conditions.The implied meaning is that without favorable conditions,the undesirable things will happen or the good results may not happen.The meaning of“kui₂”is similar to“bai”.the“kui₂+XP”construction has three semantic elements.The structure after“kui”is the third element.It is behaviors,features or experiences that can cause the speaker have some expectations.“kui3”is similar to“jingran”.The construction also has three elements.The components after“kui”is the third element that is a real result counter to the expectations.The“kui+XP”construction is mainly used to convey counter-expectation information and the speaker's personal emotions.It reflects subjectivity and intersubjectivity.Because different meaning of“kui”in this construction,their cognitive mechanisms are different.The“kui₁+XP”construction reflects empathy hierarchy,but the cognitive mechanisms of the“kui₂+XP”construction and“kui₃+XP”construction are construction coercion and lexical coercion.
