Enrichments Of Semantic Wave Theory

Knowledge practice has always been an important part in Sociology research.To explore the guiding principles of it in deep level,sociologist Karl Maton puts forward Legitimation Code Theory(LCT)whose main theoretical foundations are Code Theory and Knowledge Structure of Bernstein.There are five dimensions in LCT,among which Semantics dimension is the collaborative achievement with Systemic Functional Linguists.The semantic wave of it is closely related to cumulative knowledge building and the formation of it relies on‘Semantic Gravity' and ‘Semantic Density'.Semantic wave theory promoted the researches of discourse analysis of meanings,but the application is still under developed and the theoretical framework urges to be enriched.Based on the existing theoretical framework,the thesis applies it to the discourse analysis of classroom teaching of six teachers from SFLEP National College business English teaching competition,aiming at improving the theoretical framework and improving the applicability of the theory.The research is committed to studying the following three questions,one based on the previous one.1)How to apply ‘translation device' model and create a new ‘translation device' for college business English classroom discourse?2)How to assign numbers to the X axis and Y axis in semantic profile?3)How to make categorizations for semantic wave?The research process is first introducing the existing theoretical framework.Based on it,a new ‘translation device' is created for college business English classroom discourse.According to the unsolved problems in the theoretical framework,the number assignments improved the accuracy and clarity of semantic profile.The final step is to make categorizations for semantic waves based on the refined semantic profile,which is expected to lay foundations for further research.Research results and findings are:1)The new ‘translation device' for college business English classroom discourse is set up,improving the applicability of the theory.2)Compared to the vague depiction in Maton's framework,in this thesis,the semantic density in Y axis in semantic profile is assigned with values.X axis is assigned with the time location.Both of them make the semantic profile more accurate.3)Compared to the two ways of categorizations,in this thesis,five ways of categorizations are used to define 12 types of semantic waves,enriching the analytical framework.Future studies are suggested to further refine the ‘translation device' and semantic profile to do more detailed studies with the theory.It is also suggested to combine with more classroom teaching and other kinds of knowledge practices,so as to improve the applicability of theoretical and analytical framework and make contributions to improve classroom teaching and other knowledge practices.
