| The source text is the eighth chapter of Knowledge-building: Educational Studies in Legitimation Code Theory written by Karl Maton,Susan Hood,and Suellen Shay.This book is an academic work in the field of linguistics focusing on how to apply Legitimation Code Theory to constructing knowledge in educational studies.The selected chapter draws on dimensions of specialization and semantics in Legitimation Code Theory to investigate English literature learning in secondary schools.The translator chooses this material mainly for the following two reasons.First,Legitimation Code Theory is the frontier theory of educational sociology with practical value,which has been applied in various stages of teaching in Australia.Second,Chapter Eight is the study of English literature learning in secondary schools,which has practical significance and reference for middle school teachers in China.Academic texts are rigorous in wording and highly professional.In translation,the translator should convey the meaning of the article to the maximum extent.On this basis,the translator introduces Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizing that the meaning has priority over the form.Besides,the readers of a translated text should be able to appreciate the text in the same manner as the original readers do.As a result,the functional equivalence theory can be employed to analyze the source text.As a typical academic text,the source text contains numerous terms and attributive clauses.How to deal with them greatly affects the quality of the translation.Regarding the non-standardized terms,the translator put forward tentative method and amplification.In dealing with complex attributive clauses,the translator also summarizes four translation techniques,including pre-positioning,division,blending,and adverbial clause.Based on the translation practice of Chapter Eight and the discussion of translation techniques,this report aims to promote the spread of Legitimation Code Theory and help Chinese teachers and researchers who show interest in this theory.At the same time,it also hopes to provide a reference for the translation of academic texts in the future. |
