Under the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, the thesis is devoted to the characteristics and the cognitive motivations of Chinese atypical verb-object collocations applying Event Structure Theory.Chinese atypical verb-object collocations has long been a hot topic in the field of linguistics.Previous studies have made fruitful achievements from perspectives of syntax, pragmatics and Cognitive Linguistics. However, little literature has been found to systematically explore the characteristics and the cognitive motivations of Chinese atypical verb-object collocations.Cognitive Linguistics is a cognition-based approach to language phenomena and the cognitive motivations behind. As an important theory of Cognitive Linguistics,Event Structure Theory concerns itself with the syntactic and semantic characteristics of language structures via the path of the events language represents. Therefore, this thesis approaches Chinese atypical verb-object collocations employing Event Structure Theory, specifically focusing on the following two questions:(1)What are the semantic and syntactic characteristics of Chinese atypical verb-object collocations?(2)What are the cognitive motivations of Chinese atypical verb-object collocations? The present thesis adopts a qualitative research method, seeing description and expatiation of equal importance. The research data are mainly collected from Chinese Verb Usage Dictionary and Modern Chinese Dictionary. In addition, there is a small amount obtained by introspection. It is concluded that(1)semantically,Chinese atypical verb-object collocations are the abstract narrative of the events. The semantic implications of Chinese atypical verb-object collocations are equal to or greater than Chinese typical verb-object collocations.Syntactically,Chinese atypical verb-object collocations are relatively fixed. They are restricted by adverbial modifiers, classifiers, determiners, passive constructions and ba constructions,etc..(2)Chinese atypicalverb-object collocations are the prominence of atypical objects in terms of location,manner,purpose,etc..The level of specificity is influenced by subjective and objective factors. The significance of this thesis is mainly manifested in the following two aspects.Firstly, the study helps people understand the intrinsic relationship between verbs and objects in Chinese atypical verb-object collocations.Secondly,it enriches the related applications of Event Structure Theory.
