As one of the most important novels since the "New Period "," Waste Capital" wrote Jia Pingwa's unique thinking on the society of China in the 1980 e and 1990 s.After the publication of " Waste Capital",it once became a major cultural event in the 1990 s,which attracted widespread attention.This paper attempts to reset " Waste Capital" in the 1990 s,and restore how the city writing of Jia Pingwa becomes the "other person" of the contemporary.The different voices of the critics and writers reflect the different views on "modernity".That is to say,study on " Waste Capital" from the perspective of "City",and try to break the existing conclusions and make a new interpretation of Jia Pingwa's "urban imagination ".The article is mainly divided into four chapters.The first chapter starts with the critical thinking of the first field material,and analyzes the fate and urban change of the novel.Since its publication,comments have been mixed,presenting the phenomenon of "ice and fire twice the sky ",which directly led to the fate of " Waste Capital " is forbidden to read.Seventeen years later,with the further development of urbanization and the progress of social and cultural environment," Waste Capital " ushered in the joy of " lifting the ban ".But behind this "lifting of the ban ",one has to think about the " enlightened " of a cultural policy and the " deteriorating " paradox of the cultural environment.The vicissitudes of Chinese cities can be seen from the tortuous fate of "publishing-being banned-lifting the ban" in "Waste Capital ".The second chapter analyzes the urban writing and the reflection of modernity.This paper mainly analyzes how to question and reflect on "modernity" through the writing of "decadent" city,the manifestation of people's spiritual dilemma and the setting of "running away "."Waste Capital" through the writing of "City ",reflects the author's different imagination of the city.First of all,the sudden modernization construction not only did not break the Xi'an's inherent traditional charm and cultural psychological order,but reverse promoted Xi'an's further decadence.Secondly,Xi'an,with profound historical and cultural connotations,has lost its central position in the past,and its unique classical charm is out of date in the modernization construction.The ancient capital did not have the dignity and order of the past,leaving only chaos,empty life and people's endless desire.Finally,through the setting of the plot of "running away ",it reflects Jia Pingwa's examination of " urban modernity " from the angle of " anti-modernity ".The third chapter focuses on the novel's text resources and urban imagination.Urban or rural,thriving capital or waste capital,the old-style literati or modern intellectuals presented people's different imagination of the city.First of all,the debate about the city or the countryside examines the complex relationship between Jia Pingwa who is a "hometown writer " and the city.Secondly,the argument that thriving capital or waste capital expressed people's different "historical imagination" about the city.Finally,the old-style literati or modern intellectuals through the exploration of the city protagonist's "identity" to show Jia Pingwa's entangled psychology of traditional culture and modern culture in modern society.The fourth chapter makes an investigation on the significance of occurrence from the aspects of identity consciousness and subject construction.Around the theme of "people ",to analyze the " subject " anxiety caused by the deep development of urbanization.First of all,starting with Jia Pinwa's "identity consciousness ",this paper examines his ambiguous " identity " between urban and rural areas and his cognition of urban and rural culture.Secondly,from the theoretical level of "subjectivity" to investigate Jia Pingwa's "subjectivity" lost vigilance.Finally,examine the city's "discipline" and "punishment" for people.In the 1980 s,the process of urbanization in China was restarted,and in the face of the rapid development of the city,people as the main body of the city produced some discomfort.Jia Pingwa's "Waste Capital" belongs to a link of constructing modern city imagination,and the tortuous fate of "publishing-being banned-lifting the ban" is the embodiment of different people's imagination of "modernity" since the reform and opening up.Through the study on the "Waste Capital",try to promote the study of the city imagination,free from the existing "cognitive device",so as to realize the transformation of the thinking and reflect on the development of the urbanization.
