Dual-processing theory assumes that recognition memory involves two distinct memory processes, familiarity and recollection.Although the influence of different emotional valance intensity in stimulus valence polarity on memory has been investigated,it remain unclear whether the influence of valance intensity of emotion stimuli on recognition memory process depended on the familiarity or recollection for young and elderly. In order to further explore the influence of emotional valence intensity on the recognition memory process, this study took young and elderly as research objects, and used the modified "remember / know" paradigm to explore the influence of positive or negative emotions with different valence intensity on the recognition memory process. In Experiment 1,the modified "remember / know" paradigm was used to explore the influence of positive emotion valance intensity on the recognition memory process. The results showed that:(1)with the increased of positive emotion valance intensity, the elderly didn't find the recognition performance of high positive and low positive pictures better than that of neutral emotion pictures in the "remember" or "know" judgments.(2)In the "remember" judgments, with the enhancement of positive emotion valance intensity, the recognition performance of young people showed a "U" pattern, that was, high positive > neutral > mild positive;in the "know" judgments, the recognition performance of mild positive and neutral pictures were better than that of high positive pictures. In Experiment 2 used modified “remember/know” procedure to examine how emotional valance intensity of negative stimuli influenced potential neural basis of familiarity and recollection. The results showed that:(1)In the behavioral data of the elderly, with the increased of negative emotion valance intensity,it didn't find the recognition performance of negative emotion picture better than that of neutral emotion pictures in the "remember" or "know" judgments;in the ERP data of the elderly, there was no significant frontal old / new effects and parietal old/new effects in the recognition of emotional pictures.(2)In the "remember" judgments of young, the recognition performance of highly negative pictures was significantly higher than that of mildly negative pictures, and with the increased of the negative emotional valence intensity, the pattern of changed in the parietal old/new effects was: neutral <mild negative < highly negative;in the "know" judgments of young people, with the enhancement of negative emotional valence intensity, the pattern of recognitionperformance was: neutral picture > mild negativity > high negativity, and only in the recognition of neutral picture, there was significant frontal old / new effects. The conclusions of this study were as follows:(1)In the recognition of positive emotions, there was no positivity effect was found for the elderly; In the recognition of positive emotions for young, the emotional enhancement of remembering was found;especially in the "remembering" judgments for young, with the enhancement of positive emotional valence intensity, the recognition performance presented a "U" pattern.(2)In the recognition of negative emotions, compared with the elderly, young people have a negative biases;with the increase of negative emotion valence intensity, recognition retrieval process for young was more dependent on recollection;with the decrease of negative emotion valence intensity, recognition retrieval process of neutral pictures for young was more dependent on familiarity.
