A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Love Of A Good Woman (Excerpt)

This English-Chinese translation practice report is based on Alice Munro' s short story The Love of a Good Woman.The translator analyzes and deals with the difficulties of translation from the lexical and syntactical aspects to deepen the understanding of Munro' work,which provides some reference values for Munro' s related research.The report includes four parts,namely introduction,translation process,case study and conclusion.In the process of translation,the translator firstly analyzes the characteristics of the original text: at lexical level,Munro is fond of using slang;while at syntactical level,there exist many passive voices and complex sentences.As for the above characteristics,the translator chooses different translating strategies during the translation process: using annotation to translate slang in order to help the target readers to know the origin of slang and fully understand the original text.When translating passive voices,the translator mainly adopts conversion to make passive voices into active ones which conform to the habits of Chinese readers.When translating long and complex sentences,the translator uses reversion,division and addition.The translator adjusts the structure of sentences in the original text,extracts some of the components of the sentences from the trunk and adds some related contents to make the translation more fluent and completed.The report indicates that,in Alice Munro' short story The Love of a Good Woman,there exist many slang,passive voices and complex sentences,so the translator should not only pay attention to the features of the original text,but also analyze the expressive differences in Chinese and English,then use appropriate translation methods to make the translated version more conform with the needs of the target readers.The translation practice report shows that it needs to be improved in the author's translation,despite the fact that it has its own characteristics in the translation of slang,passive voices and complex sentences.I do hope that this report has certain reference values for related translators and researchers of Munro and her works.
