?An English-Chinese Dictionary in the vernacular of the Hakka People in the Canton Provi-nce? is compiled by M.C.Mackenzie missionary in bilingual languages between Ming dynast-y and early Qing, and it systematically records the characters of Hakka dialect, which truly reflects the voice, vocabulary and colloquial sayings of Hakka between the early 20 th century and the end of 19 century. The object of this paper is the Hakka dialect characters.Stuying dialect characters is quite difficuilt in dialect research.Firstly, from the dialect word category, concept and its hierarchical classification, there is no unified standard, the research perspective is different.Secondly, the formation of dialect characters is due to open the door, not closed the door, then it will continue to absorb and draw on the words of other languages as time progresses, and create characters that conform to the characteristics of the dialect and gradually perfect the phenomenon of "sound without characters" in dialect characters. For this reason, the created characters of the dialect and the borrowed word are the main directions of this paper.Among them, the characters are mainly borrowed from Hok-keen Dialect and Cantonese. The study of dialect characters can be better understanding the characters of Hakka dialect and play a role in protecting and inheriting Hakka dialect.
