A Report Of The Chinese Translation Of The Bipolar ? Disorder Workbook(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts Theory

With the development of the society,culture,economy and under the social pressure,mental health in modern society has received more and more attention from all over the world.Co-authored by Dr.Stephanie McMurray Roberts,a clinical psychologist,Dr.Louisa Sylvia and Dr.Noreen Riley Harrington,worked as faculty in Harvard Medical School,Bipolar II Disorder Workbook: Managing Recurrent Depression,Mania and Anxiety is a medical psychology book introducing and expounding education,tools for self-monitoring,and step-by-step treatments,focusing on the definitions and diagnosis of bipolar II disorder,depression,hypomania,anxiety disorders,as well as the medication regimens,psychotherapy,and social support to deal with the onset of these symptoms.This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of some chapters of the Bipolar II Disorder Workbook,and explores the categories and strategies of level shifts and category shifts in English-Chinese translation.Catford first proposed translation shift theory in the book A Linguistic Theory of Translation."Shifts" are the departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the source language to the target language.Translation shifts fall into two categories: level shifts and category shifts.By exploring the level shifts and category shifts in the translation process of Bipolar II Disorder Workbook from the perspective of translation shift theory,the study found that due to the inherent differences between English and Chinese,translation shift is ubiquitous in the translation process.From the perspective of level shifts,the translator transforms the affixes of nouns and tenses of verbs into lexical means.From the perspective of category shifts,it is divided into four circumstances,including structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts among which the first three kinds of translation shifts are applied more frequently.The study shows that Catford's translation shift theory has an effective guidance on and strong explanatory power in the translation of popular science readings of non-literary texts.In addition,through the translation of some chapters of this book,it is expected to attract attention to the books on mental health,and provide some reference for the full translation of the book and the translation of the texts in the same field in the future.
