The translation material consists of four essays taken from The History of Hangzhou Geographical Names, which are “Hushu Road”,“Names of Ancient Wells in Hangzhou”,“Top Eight Scenes of Qiantang River in the Yuan Dynasty”,and “Top Eighteen Scenes of West Lake in the Qing Dynasty”.This report presents the process of translating sentences with implicit logical relations and proposes related tactics based on the Theory of Cohesion and Coherence.Chinese is a parataxis language, and the logical relations of Chinese are usually implicit. This feature is especially evident in Classical Chinese. However,as a hypotaxis language, the logical relations of English are usually demonstrated by using connectives and grammatical structure explicitly. Therefore, how to translate sentences with implicit logical relations from Classical Chinese to English and achieve the cohesion and coherence of the text are the challenges in this translation project. The implicit logical relations of this report can be subdivided into three groups, which are implicit causal relation, implicit conditional relation, and implicit adversative relation.Guided by Halliday's theory of Cohesion and Coherence, solutions to the above three groups of difficulties are put forward as follows: 1)adding causal linking words and reorganizing the structure are used to translate sentences with implicit causal relation;2)adding adverbial clause and combination are used to translate sentences with implicit conditional relation;3)adding adversative linking words is employed to translate sentences with implicit adversative relation. It is shown that the above tactics can effectively helped the author to translate the implicit logical relations of this project. The author hopes that these tactics would provide useful guidance and reference for other translators in translating implicit logical relations.
