A Report On C-E Translation Of A Reading Book:Ningbo History And Culture (Excerpted)

Based on Escarpit's description of translation as “a sort of creative treason”,Chinese Professor Xie Tianzhen makes an elaborated illustration on creative treason and applies it as the theory of his medio-translatology research.Different from the traditional translation theory,creative treason gives analysis and guidance to translation from the perspective of literature acceptance and diffusion,which happens to echo the historical background of Chinese culture going global.Under the guidance of creative treason theory,this translation report makes an analysis of the C-E translation of Chapter Ten(Ningbo Liang-Zhu Culture)and the first section of Chapter Eleven(Features of Ningbo Folk Culture)of A Book: Ningbo History and Culture,with a total of 10,038 Chinese characters.The translation project was authorized by the chief editor of the book Liang Xudong in November 2017 and was finished by the author in six months.In the process of translating,the author studies the application of creative treason at the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The translation strategies including contextual amplification,paraphrasing,and abridged translation are thus employed to make the translated text more readable to the target readers and also get wider diffusion and acceptance in the cultural context of the receptor language.The translation report consists of five parts.Chapter One is the translation project description,which introduces the background,significance and the source text of the project.Chapter Two is the translation process description illustrating the preparation and while-translating process of the project.Chapter Three is the theoretical basis,i.e.creative treason of this translation practice.Chapter Four concentrates on how the creative treason theory is applied to guide the detailed case analysis and some translation strategies are thus put forward.Chapter Five concludes the translation strategies the author applies respectively at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.The limitations of this translation report,some new gains and suggestions of the author are also given at the end.
