Vocabulary,as a basic unit of language,is significant for English learning.Vocabulary presentation is the process that the relevant target word is presented to language learners in a certain way or method. As it is known, word presentation technique plays a vital role in vocabulary teaching. With the advent of the information age, more and more abundant multimedia materials have emerged in teaching.According to cognitive psychology, memory effect is closely related to the depth and width of information processing, and different multimedia presentation will affect the degree of processing and coding of information. Thus, this study focused on the sequential problem of multimedia presentation, and designed three different presentation modes with the integration of word, picture, and video,namely,word-picture-video presentation,video-word-picture presentation, and picture-video-word presentation.Based on Standard Model of Memory,Noticing Hypothesis and Dual Coding Theory, this study aimed at exploring the following questions:(1)Are there significant differences among the effects of three presentation modes?(2)Which one among the three presentation modes produces the best retention of the target words in instant test?(3)Which one among the three presentation modes produces the best retention of the target words in delayed test?60 senior high school students participated in the experiment. They were divided into three groups, and each group was employed for one presentation mode. After the presentation, there was an instant test and a delayed test one week later. The experimental data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0.Research results were as follows:(1)Different multimedia presentation modes had different effects.(2)In instant test,word-picture-video presentation had the best effect on vocabulary retention. The effect of video-word-picture presentation was similar to that of picture-video-word presentation.(3)In delayed test,word-picture-video presentation still kept the best effect, and the memory effect of video-word-picture presentation was better than that of picture-video-word presentation. The above findings indicated that vocabulary teaching and learning with the aid of multimedia would be more effective if the target word was presented in a sequence as word enhanced by a picture and reinforced by a video.More specifically,a sequence from form to meaning and from static to dynamic was more effective in vocabulary teaching.
