Since 1970s,the number of researches related to English vocabulary teaching is on the rise.Presentation is a very important part during English teaching process,which has been studied by many scholars at home and abroad.In the era of information,a lot of new means have emerged into the field of traditional vocabulary teaching,such as AI,APP,multimedia vocabulary presentation modes.Nowadays,many researches have showed that multimedia presentation modes have better effects on English teaching than single-medium presentation modes.It is valuable to make most use of various kinds of materials to present vocabulary.There are many researches on vocabulary presentation indicating that picture is beneficial to the memory effect.As for how to combine picture and text(word and translation)together,such as the sequence problem,there still needs a further study.In view of this,the thesis compares text-first and picture-second presentation mode,picture-first and text-second presentation mode and picture-text simultaneous presentation mode(presentation mode 1,2,3 in the following text)for vocabulary presentation by experiments,intending to answer the following questions:(1)Which one among the three presentation modes is best for short-term(within a week)memory?Are there significant differences among the effects of three different presentation modes for short-term memory?(2)Which one among the three presentation modes is best for long-term(more than a week)memory?Are there significant differences among the effects of three different presentation modes for long-term memory?Based on Standard Model of Memory,the Information Processing Theory and Dual Coding Theory,the author picks 90 Non-English majors from grade 1 in Beijing Jiaotong University.They are divided into three groups.After presentation of vocabulary,the participants take instant test immediately.After one week,they take delayed test.From the results of instant test,we know that presentation mode 1 has the highest mean value.Presentation mode 2 stands in the middle position and presentation mode 3 has the lowest mean value.From the results of delayed test,we know that presentation mode 2 has the highest mean value.Presentation mode 3 stands in the middle position.Presentation mode 2 has the lowest score.Based on the above findings,we give the following advice for vocabulary teaching.When we make decisions about how to present vocabulary for English learners,we should take the aims of the students into consideration.If they pursue the fast increaseof words in short time(within a week),the vocabulary should be presented with text-first and picture-second presentation mode.If they want to remember the words for longer time(more than a week)and do not pursue the large quantity of new words in short time,teachers can present the words with picture-first and text-second presentation mode.This result can be applied into English teaching classes and the development of vocabulary Apps.
