Martial arts fiction attracts the public with the chivalrous and heroic style, ups and downs in jianghu, romantic love stories and profound Chinese traditional cultural elements contained therein. However, the spread of popular Chinese martial arts fiction in the west is not smooth, and only a small number of novels of this genre have been translated into English, not receiving much attention until recent years.Due to the small number of translations of classical martial arts fiction, the study of martial arts fiction translations accounts for a small proportion in the whole literary translation. From the perspective of eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen, this thesis regards translation as a process in which the translator adapts to the eco-environment of translation and makes corresponding choices.Taking Anna Holmwood's translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes-A Hero Born as the corpus, this thesis aims to study how she adapts to the translational eco-environment and how she transforms the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions in translation. The results show that among the three levels of linguistic dimension,at the lexical level, she adopts different translation strategies to retain concise and accurate expressions in foul languages, onomatopoeia and four-character words;at the syntactic level, she adjusts sentence structures according to the differences between Chinese and western thinking patterns in order to adapt to the ecological environment of the target language;at the textual level, she adjusts the arrangement and the style of text.In the cultural dimension, transliteration, literal translation and free translation are applied to translate religious words, cuisine, idioms and poetry. In the communicative dimension, different translation strategies like transliteration and free translation are used to spread the names of swordsmen, martial arts to western readers and make adaptable choices from the communicative dimension. The results show that eco-translatology has great explanatory power when it is applied to Anna Holmwood's translation, and the present study is of significance to Chinese martial arts fiction and the adaptability of eco-translatology theory.
