A Study On The English Translation Of The Legend Of The Condor Heroes: A Hero Born: An Intertextuality Perspective

The theory of intertextuality has been widely applied to the studies of philosophy,linguistics,psychology and the like,which brings new social,historical and cultural meaning to text theory with its open and diverse characteristics.New insights are also brought to translation theories and practices.Therefore,translation is no longer a mere mechanical transformation,but the transformation and transmission of multiple intertextual relations among texts.Basil Hatim and Ian Mason have formally introduced intertextuality to translation studies in their cooperative work Discourse and the Translator.Based on the comparison between the Chinese version of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born and its English version,this thesis first studies the martial art moves,the fighting scenes as well as the characters' names from the perspective of intertextuality.Then,focusing on the intertextuality in the English version of them,this thesis explores the intertextual relations within its own text and other texts as well as the transference of intertextual expressions from the source text to the target text.Finally,based on the qualitative and quantitative methods,the author makes a profound analysis of the way the translator of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born deals with the intertextual signals in the process of translating,so as to explore the connotative meaning of these intertextual signals and the theoretical translation strategies.In the light of intertextuality theory,this thesis makes a data-based analysis of the techniques employed in the translation of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born.Major findings are:(1)In translating the martial art moves,the translator mainly uses omission,literal translation,free translation as well as semantic translation,while the transliteration with literal translation is less frequently used.(2)In translating the fighting scenes,four translation strategies are mainly used,which are addition,omission,literal translation and free translation.(3)During the process of translating the characters' names,the translator mainly uses transliteration,literal translation,conventionalized translation as well as transliteration with literal translation.Different from the translation of the martial art moves and the fighting scenes,the translator fully respects the creation of the original writer and no omission and addition are used in translating the characters' names.(4)For the comprehensive analysis of the translation of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born,omission and transliteration are greatly used.Due to the intertextuality of the source text,target text and the intertextuality between the source and target texts,the translator has used various translation strategies in the translation of the martial art moves,the fighting scenes and the characters' names in the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born.The readability and reception of the translation have been improved by these strategies to some extent.Applying intertextuality to the translation studies of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born not only enriches the choice of genres used in translation studies in the light of intertextuality,but also enlarges the research of the Legend of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born.Therefore,this thesis,to some extent,contributes both theoretical and practical meanings to the translation studies of wuxia novels.
