Reading is playing an important role in English learning,and literary reading is a greatly effective way for students to input English language,contact the linguistic environments,cultivate their English reading skills and improve their humanistic qualities.Both National English Curriculum Standards for Common Senior High School(the 2007 edition)and its 2017 edition give a definite requirement for the students' literary reading: Students are able to appreciate simple English literary works with the help of teachers.However,in reality,the facts of the lack of literary texts and teachers' guidance make it impossible for most of the students in senior high schools to read literary works.By searching and classifying the relevant literature,the writer finds that literary reading has positive effects on enriching students' vocabulary,bettering their grammar,arousing their reading interests and improving their reading skills.Based on the theory of Constructivist Learning,the theory of Zone of Proximal Development and the theory of Scaffolding Instruction,this paper aims at demonstrating the necessity and feasibility of reading simple English literary works in senior high schools.By means of literature research method,experiment research and comparative research,this paper makes an attempt to explore the influence of the Scaffolding guided literary reading on students' reading ability.This study takes two ordinary classes(one as the experimental class and the other as the control class)in Youxi No.1 Middle School of Fujian Province as the experimental subjects.Applying the Scaffolding Teaching Method to this study,the writer guides students to read simple literary works in the process of pre-reading stage,while-reading stage and post-reading stage.Then by comparing the measured data before and after the experiment,the writer draws the following conclusions.1)Guided literary reading has positive effects on bettering students' comprehension of details.2)Guided literary reading has positive effects on improving students ‘ability to judge and reason.3)Guided literary reading can facilitate students' reading ability.It is hoped that the present study may contribute to teaching literary reading insenior high schools.
