The convention of holding press conferences in Two Sessions began in 1998 when Premier Zhu Rongji firstly held a press conference in the Two Sessions of that year.Since then,it has gradually become a routine that the premier of state council and major ministers will respectively hold press conferences during every year's Two Sessions.Since 2013,Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has presided over annual press conference on foreign affairs for seven years running.Under the perspective of cognitive linguistics, based on the case of Sun Ning's interpreting work for 2015 foreign ministers press conference, this thesis focuses on the interpreting strategy for structural metaphors,an important kind of conceptual metaphors. After recognizing and classifying all the structural metaphors in this press conference through Metaphor Identification Process, the author found that physical/mechanical metaphors, journey metaphors, engineering metaphors, war metaphors and family/friend metaphors are the six most ubiquitous structural metaphors in the source language of this press conference. The author then analyzed Sun Ning's utilization frequency of different interpreting methods to different kinds of structural metaphors. The author pointed out that three basic interpreting methods to structural metaphor are literal interpreting, omitting and substitution, but the utilization frequency of them varies in coping with different kinds of structural metaphors. If the source domain of a structural metaphor is more universal in human being's life and culture, then this kind of metaphor is more likely and more available to be literal translated or interpreted. On the contrary,if the source domain of a structural metaphor has distinctive cultural feature of the source language, then those kinds of structural metaphors are less likely to be literal translated and interpreted, and the probability of omitting or substituting the structural metaphor goes higher. The author also found that,in Chinese-English interpretation, there are some regular patterns in metaphor substitution. For example, sometimes interpreter can substitute a war metaphor for a journey metaphor in C-E interpreting, and vice versa.Interpreters need to conclude and note such regular patterns in metaphor substitution during their usual practice,so that they are able to realize quick substitution in real interpreting work.
