The theory of intertextuality has attracted widespread attention since it was proposed by Julia Christie.Scholars such as Roland Barthe,Gerard Genette and others have subsequently enriched the theory from various perspectives,making this theory continuously developed and improved.Since the late 20 th century,intertextuality theory permeate widely in the practice of western and Chinese modern and contemporary literary criticism,and has a high status.Julian Barnes,as a well-known contemporary British novelist,can see obvious the traces of the former text in his literary creation.Reading from the perspective of intertextuality can gain a deeper understanding of his creation.This article combines the theory of intertextuality with Barnes' s works,selects some of Barnes' s most typical works.It discusses the intertextuality characteristics of Barnes' s novels and the expression effects and meaning they produce.This paper is divided into five parts.First,the introduction introduces Barnes' s life and creation and carding a comprehensive study on domestic and foreign scholars.Secondly,the intertextuality theory is combed.Chapters one and two analyze the characteristics of Barnes' intertextuality.The first chapter analyzes the self-text intertextuality in Barnes' s creation,that is,the intertextual relationship existing in the texts created by himself,which includes intertextuality relationship in the same text and intertextual relationship betweendifferent texts.The second chapter analyzes the intertextual relationship between Barnes' s works and other previous texts.The specific methods included quotation,allusion,parody and collage.The third chapter discusses the meaning and expression effect of Barnes' intertextuality creation.Barnes' intertextuality creation has outstanding effects on constructing multiple discourses,innovating literary forms,and expressing historical themes.The conclusion summarizes the viewpoint of the full text,and briefly compares the differences between Barnes and other writers who work on intertextuality,to finding out the uniqueness of Barnes' intertextuality.Finally,it attempts to make a useful inspiration for Chinese literary creation through the research on the use of Barnes' intertextual creative techniques.
