A Research On Rhetoric Translation Of The Peony Pavilion From The Perspective Of Gestalt Theory

Rhetoric is a ubiquitous linguistic phenomenon and an important linguistic element of The Peony Pavilion.The application of rhetoric can make the characters and plots vivid and interesting,but can also make the translation process of The Peony Pavilion difficult.The author believes that in the process of studying the translation of The Peony Pavilion,we must attach importance to the comprehension of the rhetoric translation.Therefore,in this thesis,the author studies the rhetoric translation of The Peony Pavilion from Gestalt theory to provide a new perspective for the rhetoric translation,and explores how the translator makes the rhetoric achieve effective transmission in order to verify the interpretation and guidance of Gestalt theory in the process of the rhetoric translation,which can provide the reference for the related studies of the rhetoric translation.The author selects twelve rhetorical devices of The Peony Pavilion,takes Wang Rongpei's translation as an example,and applies the principles of proximity,similarity,closure and continuity of Gestalt theory to the rhetoric translation.This research shows that the overall context of the original text is closely connected with the rhetorical devices,and the translator cannot ignore the relationship between the overall context and the rhetoric meaning in the rhetoric translation,which is in line with the idea that Gestalt theory highlights the relationship between the whole and the parts.Moreover,the principle of proximity is conducive to arranging these scattered linguistic elements into an overall meaning;the principle of similarity is conducive to arranging these linguistic elements with similar meanings into an overall meaning;the principle of closure is conducive to filling the semantic banks with the translators' existing knowledge and experience;the principle of continuity is conducive to the manifestation of the logical relation in the translation and makes the translation coherent.Thus it can be seen that Gestalt theory can play a guiding role in the process of the rhetoric translation and affect the translator's choice of translation strategy,which can make the translator tend to perceive the original text as an organic whole and then keep the translator from separating the overall context and the partial meaning.Eventually,the rhetoric meaning of the original text can be fully reproduced.
