English argumentative writing is a kind of high order thinking activity.The writing process can well reflect students' thinking process.Critical thinking plays an important role in the writing process.However,under the pressure of traditional and exam-oriented education in China,many students lack critical thinking ability in English argumentative writing.There is lack of logic in students' writing.Therefore,the ways of developing students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing has become a heated research topic for scholars all over the world.At present,most research on cultivating students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing is conducted in universities.There is little related research in high schools.However,it is very important to develop students' critical thinking ability in English writing in high schools.This study aims to investigate the ways of cultivating Senior Two students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing.In this paper,the author researched on three questions.1.What's the current level of Senior Two students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing?2.What are the ways of cultivating Senior Two students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing?3.What's the effect of developing students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing?The study was conducted in N School in Shijiazhuang.The participants are 35 students who came from Class 2,Grade 2.The study consists of three parts.The first part is the pretest.The second part is the experiment.The third part is the post-test.The author made students finish the writing task in the pretest.Then the author used Stapleton's method and interviews to measure students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing.The result was that high school students' critical thinking was at a low level in English argumentative writing.During the process of the experiment,the author came up with practical ways of developing middle school students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing through writing tasks,In the post-test,the author used Stapleton's model and interviews again to measure students' critical thinking in English argumentative writing.The result was that students' critical thinking was at a higher level.It showed that senior school student' critical thinking in English argumentative writing developed to some extent after the experiment.It implied that practical methods of cultivating students' critical thinking contributed to the development of students' critical thinking ability.Based on the theoretical research on critical thinking,this study focused on the practical ways of developing students' critical thinking.It aimed to explore the concrete measures to cultivate student' critical thinking in English argumentative writing,which provided some pedagogical suggestions of developing senior high school students' critical thinking in English learning.
