As one of the basic language skills,writing is a crucial component of English teaching in senior high schools and a way to embody students' comprehensive language application ability.However,students' poor writing ability has always been bothering themselves and teachers.In addition,reading which is the another basic language skill plays an important role in English teaching and learning.Reading and writing,as the input and output of language,are mutually reinforcing and inseparable in English learning.Nevertheless,reading and writing are often taught separately in practical English teaching and it is ubiquitous to value reading over writing.Based on Input Hypothesis and Output Hypothesis,this study applied Reading-to-Write Approach with the combination of English newspaper reading to English writing teaching in senior high schools to explore the influence of English newspaper reading on senior high school students' English writing ability.In order to arouse students' reading interest and provide more realistic language input,21 st Century was introduced into classroom as the reading material before writing in this research.21 st Century not only has timeliness,which is a unique feature of newspapers and periodicals,but also possesses a wide range of themes,authentic language and moderate difficulty for students to read.Besides,it is widely used in Chinese high schools.In this study,the author chose a complete class of Senior Two from a senior high school in Chengdu as the research subjects and carried out a three-month application study of Reading-to-Write Approach based on English newspaper reading.This study focuses on the following two questions:(1)What are the main writing problems of senior high school students?(2)What are the effects of the application of Reading-to-Write Approach based on English newspaper reading on the content,structure and language of senior high school students' writing?In order to figure out the above questions,this study used questionnaire,writing tests and interview to analyze the results.Through the analysis and discussion of the data obtained from the three tools,here are the following findings: in general,Reading-to-Write Approach based on English newspaper reading has a positive effect on improving students' overall writing ability.Specifically,students could write compositions with more abundant content,better-organized structure and more diverse and accurate language.This study confirms that Reading-to-Write Approach based on English newspaper reading is feasible in senior high school English writing teaching.English newspaper reading as a comprehensible input has a positive effect on students' writing ability.First of all,newspaper reading is easier to arouse students' reading interest.Secondly,English newspapers reading is not only contribute to broaden students' horizon and accumulate writing material,but also can help students improve their ability of text organization,vocabulary and sentence pattern application,grammar and so on.
