A Practice Report On Patent Abstract Translation

Patent documents include the patent request,description,claim,abstract and other documents of the patent application specification and approved patent specification.The patent abstract is an overview of the contents of the patent specification and belongs to a patent application document.On April 17 th,2019,recommended by my supervisor,I participated in the Chinese-English translation project of patent abstracts provided by the Intellectual Property Publishing House.Relating to machinery,transportation,medicine,chemistry,communication and other fields,the project had accumulated about 50,000 words of translated patent abstracts by the end of September 2019 through an online patent translation platform called “itransplus” that is a multi-functional online translation platform independently developed by the Intellectual Property Publishing House.Each patent abstract provided by the platform consists of about 300 words,and the platform is equipped with a countdown reminder with one-hour maximum processing time for each text.The translation quality was examined by my supervisor,the patent translation project teacher and the proofreading and grading mechanism of the Intellectual Property Publishing House.Based on the practical project of Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts from the Intellectual Property Publishing House,this report analyzes and summarizes the characteristics and translation methods of Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts in different fields from five parts: task description,task process,pre-translation preparations,case analysis and conclusion.In this report,the specialized patent knowledge related,the translation tools used and the theories applied in the process of pre-translation preparations are introduced from three aspects: specialized preparations,technical preparations and theoretical preparations;specific cases from different texts are analyzed at three levels: lexical level,syntactic level,and symbolic level;and the whole translation practice process is summarized from the perspective of my own improvement and experience.I expect that the technical skills and methods mentioned in this report can provide references and help for translators in patent related fields.
