Whether virtue ethics entails the objectivity of morality is a problem that has always been the concern of the academic world. Some scholars believe that virtue ethics does not have the objectivity of morality. However,Rosalind Hursthouse takes the opposite view. She tries to prove the objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics through the naturalistic teleology. She holds that the objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics depends on three theses:(1)The virtues benefit their possessor.(2)The virtues make their possessor a good human being.(3)The above two features of the virtues are interrelated.Through the first two theses,Hursthouse verifies the objectivity of the standard list of the virtues and virtue characters respectively. Finally, through the third thesis, she demonstrates that the unity of the standard list of the virtues and virtue characters in virtue ethics is possible, which reflects the harmony of human nature in virtue ethics. It also shows us the objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics. The objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics provides an effective solution to the dilemma between objectivity and normativity of contemporary virtue ethics. At the same time,Hursthouse's theory also answers the questions about the sociality and historicity of and moral nihilism of the objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics. As a representative figure of contemporary virtue ethics,Hursthouse establishes virtue ethics with its independent status as normative ethics and promotes the revival and development of virtue ethics by verifying the objectivity of morality in relation to virtue ethics.
