Metaphor and metonymy,as the linguistic phenomenon, are ubiquitous in our life.Traditionally, both metaphor and metonymy are considered as the rhetorical devices,so the studies of metaphor translation and metonymy translation mainly start from the rhetorical perspective. However, since Lakoff,G.& Johnson,M.put forward the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Metonymy Theory in Metaphors We Live By in 1980,metaphor and metonymy have been widely regarded as the means of cognition and the pattern of thinking from cognitive perspective, thus providing a new perspective for the study of metaphor translation and metonymy translation. As the first rip-racing novel of Mai Jia who is titled as “Father of Chinese Informant Literature” and “King of Espionage Novels” and is the only contemporary writer after Lu Xun,Qian Zhongshu, and Elieen Chang whose work was collected in the Penguin Classics Library,Jiemi is more highly appreciated and even recognized by overseas readers than ever.Importantly, there are abundant metaphorical and metonymic expressions in this classic example,so whether they are well translated or not plays an indispensable role in the understanding and acceptance of Jiemi in the overseas market. Thus there is certain significance to study metaphor translation and metonymy translation of Jiemi and its English version: Decode-A Novel. This thesis, based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Metonymy Theory in cognitive linguistics, intends to study the translation of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy taking Jiemi and its English version Decode-A Novel as the research object.According to the definition, characteristics, working mechanism and classification of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, the thesis first describes the main categories and quantity of conceptual metaphors and conceptual metonymies and then analyzes the translation methods & skills mainly adopted by the translator for conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy and lastly concludes the affecting factors on the translation of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy in order to provide certain reference and enlightenment for their translation studies.Major findings of the thesis are as follows: Firstly, the classifications of conceptualmetaphor and conceptual metonymy in English are also applicable in Chinese, which are universal.Secondly, the translation methods of literal translation, free translation and imitation and skills of omission, amplification and shift are mainly adopted in order to express the metaphorical and metonymic meaning as far as possible and be well understood by target language(TL)reader further.Thirdly, the main affecting factors on translation of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy include cognitive factor, linguistic factor, cultural factor and others. With the help of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Metonymy Theory in cognitive linguistics, the thesis attempts to broaden the research perspective of the two theories and provide certain reference and enlightenment for metaphor translation and metonymy translation of Chinese spy novels.
