A Report On The E-C Translation Of Elephant

This report is an English-Chinese translation report on the whole book of Elephant,written by a British writer Errol Fuller,a famous writer,artist and natural historian.Elephant is really a great popular science book,replete with deeply moving and highly informative images and text.This book traces the evolution of these magnificent animals from prehistoric Mammoths and Mastodons to today's African and Asian elephants,and observes their living habits and studies the roles of elephants in culture around the world,from folklore and artistic value to the use of elephants as war machines;discusses the importance of protecting elephants.After a brief introduction of the background information and the process of translation,the report analyzes the difficulties and the corresponding solutions by detailed case analysis.The difficulties in this translation practice are mainly reflected in lexical and syntactic level.In the case of lexical level,choice of word-meanings,extension of word-meanings,conversion of parts of speech,amplification are adopted.As for the syntactic level,following the original syntactic order,reinventing the sentence structures,division and combination are applied in the process of translation.During the translation practice,the translator flexibly uses the translation methods to make the target text consistent with the source text in order to create a more fluent and readable translation.Eventually,the report also mentions the lessons and experience in translation practice as well as the limitations and suggestions for further research.This translation practice indicates that the translator's competence needs to be continuously improved and expanded,including professional translation methods,rich cultural knowledge and solid bilingual ability of both English and Chinese.At the sametime,having a rigorous academic attitude is pretty essential for a translator in the process of translation.In addition,the translation of this book not only helps readers to further know about the elephants and their related information but also helps readers to further study the elephants and provides reference for translators of other such literary works.
