A Report On Translation Of The Atlantic Migration: 1607-1860 (Chapter 1-2) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

In this international society featuring frequent exchanges among countries,the translation of informative text such as historical text is playing an increasingly important role in translation field.However,in the academic circle,little effort has been made to the English-Chinese translation research on historical texts.In this report,Chapter One and Two in The Atlantic Migration:1607-1860,written by Marcus Lee Hansen are chosen as translation practice materials.This book covers the social and economic background of emigrant groups to the United States from colonial days to the eve of American Civil War and mainly deals with the great transatlantic migration of white peoplesThis report firstly introduces the book and its author in detail,and profoundly expounds the purposes and significance of the research.Then,combining with the translation practice of the first and second chapter of the Atlantic Migration:1607-1860,this report elaborates the preparation work before translation,the translation procedures and the post-translation items from the perspective of the skopos theory of German Functional Approaches.Afterwards,case analysis is conducted through combining the three rules of skopos theory with the practical problems encountered in translation,and different translations methods are proposed in order to solve specific translation difficulties.Based on the coherence rule,the method of sematic extension is adopted to solve the translation of some historical professional nouns in the text;besides,division,adjustment of the word order and conversion are used for the long and complex sentences translation and passive sentences translation;in line with the fidelity rule,the application of four-character structure is adopted to make the translation faithful to the original content,and the use of some formal words can make the translation more loyal to the original style;on the basis of the skopos rule,the methods of compensation and paraphrase are respectively adopted to solve the translation of sentences with historical background information and with expression obstructionUnder the guidance of skopos theory,this report finds an effective way to translate historical texts and puts forward some useful and practical translation methods to solve the difficulties,making the translation retain the linguistic features of the source text to the greatest extent and meet the expectations of the target language readers.It is hoped that this report can provide a reference for the translation research and practice of historical texts in the future.
