The translation and dissemination of Chinese films and TV programs,as an essential bridge to boost Chinese culture to go abroad,has played a unique role in deepening cross-cultural communication between China and beyond and enhancing the international image of China.Based on different social and historical backgrounds,specific translation conditions and international situation,this thesis probes into the features of dissemination of Chinese films and TV programs in different historical stages and the translation characteristics since 1949 by means of historical approach and analytical induction.There have been four periods featuring vigorous exploration,zigzag communication,booming dissemination,and diversified development.In the first two stages,the translation featuring dubbing has experienced a relatively sluggish development in quality and technology with strong political features.Thanks to the supportive policies of reform and opening up in the third stage,there has been remarkable progress in techniques and translation quality,and subtitles enjoyed growing popularity and cultural elements have been a focus.In the last stage,with the drive of favorable foreign policies,the translation and dissemination has been advanced with stronger color of Chinese culture,and the translation style is getting more fashionable and popular with distinctive Chinese characteristics.On the basis of Theo Hermans' theories of translation norms,this paper conducts a case study of variety show If You Are The One with its impressive dissemination effect in Australia.It can be concluded that the proper subtitle translation contributes to its success to a great extent apart from the rich content and unique nature of the program.In this field,translators are supposed to flexibly select appropriate translation strategies in line with cultural awareness,specific contexts,translatability of texts and expectations of the audience so as to further promote the dissemination of Chinese films and TV programs abroad.
