Most of the researches on sport interpreting focus on the translation of transcribed texts, while multimodal discourse including spoken language, gesture, body movement and artifacts, are often ignored.By taking both verbal and non-verbal elements into account, this thesis aims to figure out the role of understanding and using multimodal discourse in sport interpreting activities.Based on the theoretical framework of multimodal discourse analysis proposed by Zhang Delu, this study designed a new research model for descriptive analysis from the perspective of Halliday’s meta-pragmatic function. With case study and questionnaire survey of football coaches, this paper reflects on the role of multimodal discourse in sport interpreting.By analyzing examples of sport interpreting, this thesis points out that multimodal discourse plays an important role in the understanding of the source language and the output of interpreting discourse. In sport interpreting, whether the interpreter can correctly analyze and understand the source language with gesture, body movement and other modes will directly affect the quality of the interpreting output. In the process of interpreting, proper use of multimodal discourse will have a great impact on the quality and meaning expression of interpreting.According to the survey, sport interpreters should also have the basic knowledge and skills to engage in the specific sport.Sport interpreting involves a large number of professional terms, fully understands professional knowledge in relevant fields and memorizes the commonly used verbal and non-verbal expressions in a specific sport event plays an important role in the understanding and reproduction of interpreting. Therefore,in order to ensure the realization of conceptual meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual function in sport interpreting, the interpreter should fully understand and reproduce the non-verbal information of the speaker as the auxiliary and explanation of the verbal information to present the multimodal information in the source language more comprehensively.
