At present,the fast development of information technology has brought about great changes in all aspects of the society.In this information age,reading is more and more important in English teaching and learning.The multi-modal teaching model,as a kind of teaching modes,integrates the data related to the teaching content effectively and mobilizes the students' auditory and visual sensory systems comprehensively.It solves some problems in the existing classroom teaching and provides a new classroom communication mode for teachers and students.On the basis of multimodal discourse analysis theory,the researcher applies multimodal teaching mode to reading teaching through the action research,which tries to solve the three questions below:1?What will the students think of English reading learning after the application of multimodal teaching mode?2?What are the effects of multimodal teaching approach on students' reading abilities?3?What are the impacts of the teachers after the implementation of multi-mode teaching?The researcher takes 80 students in two classes of the eight grade in Shenyang Zhaijia school.There are two rounds of action research,lasting for one term.The textbook used by the author are chosen from Student Book Grade 8,published by Shanghai Education Press.There are four steps are included in this action research:defining problems,making the action plan,putting the action plan into practice,as well as evaluation and effect.Classroom observation,questionnaire,face to face talk and tests are the methods.Thus,the effects and problems can be easily found.During the study,the researcher aims to explore the effects of the application of multimodal teaching mode,find its problems therein,and try to find some solutions to solve them.The application of multimodal teaching mode to English reading teaching can make the students more interested in reading learning,stimulate their learning motivation and generate the students' passion to take part in classroom teaching more actively.When the first-round action research is done,some problem are found by classroom observation and face to face talk with students.The questions of discussion in class were a little difficult for students with a weak foundation,so that they can not participate effectively in group discussions.And the boring topic of reading materials cannot stimulate their interest in reading.The researcher solves the problems by setting up questions of different gradients during the group analysis and discussion and supplies reading materials of closing to students' life.Nevertheless,because of the time limitation and some other reasons,some deficiencies are unavoidable in the application of multimodal teaching,such as the small sample and the short time,which still need to be made better in the future.
