Multimodal teaching approach refers to using various teaching methods and means to arouse students' sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch and other senses to participate in the acquisition, processing and transmission of language information.A large number of studies have shown that teachers can use multimodal teaching approach in English listening teaching, that is,to focus on the modal characteristics of the environment in teaching and evaluation by using various forms of resources in the classroom,to improve students' interest in English listening and listening ability. However, according to the literature review, the application of multimodal teaching approach to English listening teaching in junior high schools, especially the action research report,is still inadequate. Therefore, this paper reports the author's action research on using multimodal teaching model in listening teaching,in order to provide references for optimizing English listening teaching in junior high schools. In this study, the author selected 44 students from Class 4,Grade 9 of a junior high school in Dezhou,Shandong Province, who were taught by the author,as the research participants and conducted a 16-week action research study. The research instruments mainly include interview, classroom observation, teaching journal,pre-test and post-test.This paper tries to answer the following two questions:(1)How can the students' learning interest and class participation be enhanced through the multimodal listening teaching model?(2)How can the students' listening comprehension ability be improved through the multimodal listening teaching model? Firstly, before the action research, the author learns about students' English listening level through pre-test,identifies the problem, puts forward the hypothesis and makes the action plan by analyzing the interview data.Secondly,in the process of action research, the author finds new problems in multimodal English listening teaching model through interviews, classroom observation and teaching journals, and based on this, the research plan is optimized and adjusted. Finally, the author proves the effectiveness of multimodal teaching model injunior high school English listening teaching by analyzing the data collected from the post-test and interview. The main findings are as follows: By using the five situational modes of question,entertainment,evaluation,real-life and cultural representation in the teaching process of multimodal teaching model, students' interest in English listening learning can be better improved.Through the use of multimedia, games, rewards and other teaching resources in the teaching process of multimodal teaching model, the author has mobilized students' visual, auditory, kinesthetic and other senses, and better stimulated students' participation in class.Through the use of video, audio and pictures of different types and of different difficulty levels in the teaching process of multimodal teaching model, the author meets the needs of students of different levels of English so that students' English listening comprehension ability has been better enhanced.
