The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application of Mind Map(MM)on students' review in their English learning,as well as to reveal the relationship between drawing MM and improving efficiency of English review.In order to conduct this study more purposefully,we attempted to address the following research questions.(1)Could the application of MM to review improve the students' efficiency of English review?(2)Could the application of MM to review change the students' use of learning strategies?(3)Could the application of MM change the students' attitude towards English review?Two classes in Tianjin ** High School were involved in this study,which comprised 26 students respectively without significant difference shown by their scores in pre-test of their English level.We treated the one as the experimental class(EC),and the other one as the control class(CC).During the 20-week experiment,MM was applied in the process of English review in the EC,compared with the conventional approach based on the notes in the CC.In order to test the effect of MM on their review,pre-and post-tests were performed among students both in the EC and the CC.To evaluate the effect on the cultivation of students' learning strategies,questionnaires and interviews were carried out in the EC.In addition,questionnaires and interviews were also assigned in the EC to further investigate the influence onthe attitude towards English review and MM.The pre-and post-test papers and two questionnaires were analyzed.The interviews were also collected.The data-analysis included following three tasks:(1)rating the pre-and post-test papers and examining the results;(2)comparing the results of two questionnaires;(3)analyzing and interpreting the interviews.In other words,we used both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the data in this study.From the test scores,we found(1)Much more progress were made by the students in the EC who were trained by MM in English review.(2)We postulated that the improvement might be due to the adoption of proper learning strategies,such as setting goals and making plans.The students in the EC could also monitor their English learning and make some adjustment by themselves.(3)We realized that the students in the EC became more confident in English review,and more interested in English learning after the application of the MM.In conclusion,MM could be an effective approach in English review that not only provided learning interest and promoted self-confidence,but cultivated learning strategies and improved the learning achievement as well.Because of the limited number of the subjects,further studies are needed based on the hypotheses of this study.
