Anaphora is a classical research topic in the field of linguistics.Anaphora refers to the phenomenon of using a linguistic expression to replace another linguistic expression that appears in the preceding discourse.Anaphora,as an important device of textual cohesion, seems to be common and simple, but it is actually complex. However, the previous researchers mainly focus on direct anaphora, but pay little attention to indirect anaphora, and few scholars use effective cognitive-metonymic model to analyze indirect anaphora in discourse. The focus of this study is to establish a cognitive-metonymic model based on the ideal cognitive model theory, conceptual salience theory and textual model of cognitive metonymy theory, and then illustrates and analyzes the representative indirect anaphora examples with the cognitive-metonymic model proposed in the thesis to help people understand the relationship between antecedent and anaphor in indirect anaphora better,so as to better understand English discourse. This study mainly discusses the following two research questions:Question 1: What is the cognitive-metonymic model of NP indirect anaphora, pronominal indirect anaphora and zero anaphora?Question 2: What are the performances of the cognitive-metonymic model on the interpretation of NP indirect anaphora, pronominal indirect anaphora and zero anaphora?Through qualitative research, the thesis analyzes NP indirect anaphora, pronominal indirect anaphora and zero anaphora based on the cognitive-metonymic model set up in this thesis. The corpora of this study are examples of indirect anaphora from domestic and foreign scholars' papers and books. The following conclusions can be drawn:There is a correlation among the ideal cognitive model theory, conceptual salience theory and textual model of cognitive metonymy theory in essence and the cognitivemetonymic model which can better explain indirect anaphora bases on the combination of the three theories. All kinds of indirect anaphora in the corpus of this study can be explained by the cognitive-metonymic model proposed in this thesis. The interpretation of indirect anaphora depends on human's cognitive background and specific context to a great extent, and the cognitive metonymy between anaphor and antecedent is the key to interpret English discourse.Metonymy model and salience principle in idealized cognitive model have strong explanatory power for NP indirect anaphora, while textual model of cognitive metonymytheory has strong explanatory power for pronominal indirect anaphora and zero anaphora. This thesis has both theoretical and practical contributions. In theory, firstly, this thesis expands the research field of anaphora by establishing a cognitive metonymy model to interpret indirect anaphora in English discourse effectively.Secondly, this paper classifies and integrates indirect anaphora, which has supplementary effect on the research of indirect anaphora. In practice, this research also has some significance for English teaching and learning, especially the teaching and learning of English listening and writing.
