A Parallel Corpus-based Study On The Translation Of English Animal Idioms And Its Enlightenment On The Translation Of Chinese Animal Idioms

This thesis probes into the translation of animal idioms in English and Chinese based on the English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Popular Science(ECPCPS).First,an exhaustive extraction of animal idioms in English(from the original text)and animal idioms in Chinese(from the translated text)is performed,and ultimately over 200 examples are collected.Then the extracted examples are analyzed and classified,which leads to a summary of translation strategies and translation methods adopted by translators.It is found that the translators prefer to use the translation strategy of domestication on the whole.Besides,the translators use a variety of translation methods,including liberal translation(losing the animal images),literal translation(keeping the animal images),amplification and loan translation.It is hoped that this study can provide reference for translators on the translation of animal idioms,and meanwhile to shed light on the compilation of idiom dictionary.
