This report is based on the translation of Chapters 3 and 6 of Stylistic Approaches to Translation, written by the British translation theorist Jean Boase-Beier.The author puts her efforts into the discussion of translation strategies that can be applied in academic style by analyzing her own translation practice.Relevance theory regards translation as a kind of communicative behavior, which means translators should take the cognitive ability of target readers into full consideration so that they can achieve the most appropriate reading effect through minimal cognitive efforts. The report introduces how the two translation strategies, both explicitness and standardization, can contribute to “optimal relevance” in the translation of academic texts.Meanwhile, problems and limitations are also summarized.
