On Danto's Definition Of Art

In 1964,Arthur C.Danto's paper " The Artworld" was published,which brought a huge shock to the international aesthetic and art circles,and triggered a heated discussion on art and aesthetic issues in the academic circle.Then,the philosophical disenfranchisement of Art was put forward,which has thrown waves in the academic circle.Many scholars have participated in the discussion of this art topic.As for the definition of art,Danto did not give a clear answer,but provided the necessary conditions for art from several angles,which can be divided into:(1)being about and explainable;(2)being expressive and metaphorical;(3)relying on the artworld and art history.The artworld is also an important concept in the definition of art.It contains two parts: the atmosphere of art theory and the knowledge of art history.Danto provides a reasonable identification for post-modern art by combining theory and history,and also logically proves the possibility of art definition.Danto's definition of art has two characteristics: one is the combination of essentialism and historicism,he reconciled the conflicting essentialism and Historicism and applied them to the definition of art;the other is to separate the definition of beauty and art,which is related to the characteristics of post-modern art,and beauty is no longer the necessary condition to define art.In post-modern art,the boundary between art and common goods is blurred,and it is difficult to distinguish the art world and the real world.Danto believes that understanding art is to recognize a life form to imagine a work of art is to imagine a life form in which it plays a role,and the interpretation of art needs the participation of context,so his definition of art has a tendency of contextualization.Danto's art theory has influenced the values of contemporary art creation,broken the dominant position of beauty in art aesthetics,and made art creation present a diversified situation.Because of the particularity of the definition of art,as long as we talk about the definition of art,it is difficult to avoid the risk of circular argumentation.Danto's theory of art termination is also doubted by many theorists,but its theory of art definition provides theoretical support for post-modern art,can explain the art forms produced at this stage,and provides many views on post-modern art.Just like this,the author hopes to use Danto's understanding,understand the definition of art,and think deeply about the emerging art forms.
