China Men was published in 1980,which is written by Maxine Hong Kingston,a Chinese American writer. She narrates the experiences of American grandparents and fathers and introduces the situation of China men who immigrated to America from the mid-19 th century to the 1960 s as well as their efforts to build the country. There are two translations in mainland China by Li Meihua in 1985 and by Xiao Suozhang in 2000.This thesis uses creative treason to analyze the transmission of various cultural images from the source text into the target text.At the same time, the thesis compares the similarities and differences of creative treason of the cultural images between the two translations and gives some tentative strategies for transmitting cultural images in Chinese American literature.Main contents of the thesis are as follow:The first chapter introduces the author,Maxine Hong Kingston and her novel,China Men.Current research on the author and the text is concluded and research significance is also presented. The second chapter introduces the theory, creative treason. There are some introductions to the concept and multiple subjects of creative treason. Some features and types of creative treason as well as the effects on literary translation are elucidated. The third chapter presents a research object. The thesis selects cultural images as the research object. There are some introductions to the concept, forms and transmission of cultural images. The cultural images in China Men can be classified into three types including Chinese cultural images, western cultural images and cultural images with Chinese and western hybridity. The fourth chapter analyzes the creative treason of the three cultural images from the source text to the target text. And there are similarities and differences between the two translations of cultural images. Two translators naturalize or preserve the Chinese cultural images. But they adjust the source text in different degrees. Two translators preserve or reconstruct western cultural images. But Xiao Suozhang preserves the images more. Two translators naturalize, preserve or even unconsciously mistranslate the mixed cultural images. But Xiao Suozhang prefers to preserve the images to convey the cultural hybridity of Chinese American writers. The fifth chapter further explains the reasons for the differences in terms of translators, the author, readers and environment. Some tentative strategies for the transmission of cultural images in Chinese America are proposed and some reflections on the theory and its employment are presented. Finally, the thesis believes that the employment of creative treason needs to consider the particularity of the source text.In Chinese American literature, when the translators transmit cultural images from English into Chinese,Chinese cultural images can be returned to Chinese culture by retaining Chinese cultural images. There may be no need to reconstruct or lose the source Chinese cultural images because Chinese readers can comprehend the Chinese cultural items. For the transmission of western cultural images, translators can find the Chinese and western cultural connections and reconstruct the western cultural image in order that Chinese readers can perceive and accept the western cultural images better.Meanwhile, the western cultural images won't get lost completely during the transmission. For the cultural images with Chinese and western cultural hybridity, translators can consider preserving the mixed cultural images so that Chinese readers can better perceive Chinese Americans' thoughts and connotations conveyed by the mixed images.
