From perspective of cognitive linguistics,in real life,things are divided into different categories.And the same thing may be divided into multiple categories concurrently and forms into categories of different level.In these different levels,there is a level category which is easy to be recognized and easy for differentiating things for people,namely basic-level category.Terms in the basic level position are the basic-level category vocabulary.These vocabularies possess the characteristics like complete form,shorter length of term,strong productivity,neutral property,being aggregated into very general superordinate category upward,being divided into more specific and detailed subordinate categories downward,and so on.This series of characteristics of basic-level category vocabulary make them play a significant role in teaching Chinese vocabulary to foreign students.Thus,this paper digs down deeply into the role basic-level category theory may play in enlarging vocabulary and improving vocabulary teaching effect,based on research results in teaching Chinese vocabulary to foreign students and basic-level category from predecessors.Then,it extracts basic-level category vocabulary from HSK1-3 vocabulary.Combining with the current situation of Cape Verde middle school vocabulary teaching,it illustrates in detail how to optimize vocabulary teaching in the HSK Standard Course,by focusing on these basic-level category vocabulary.It demonstrates in detail how to help learners build vocabulary cognitive network,how to enlarge vocabulary for the learners and how to improve vocabulary study efficiency.Also,it conducts targeted teaching design and implementation based on optimization method and principles.Through interviews with students to collect students' feedback on vocabulary teaching with focusing on basic-level category vocabulary.Finally,brief summary is made on this paper's research.It illustrates the shortcoming of the research,and hopes to cast a brick to attract jade,and makes more scholars pay attention to the importance of basic-level category theory in teaching Chinese vocabulary to foreign students.
