| Kazuo Ishiguro,the winner of Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017,is a famous British immigrant writer born in Japan.His first novel,A Pale View of Hills,is about a Japanese British woman's memory of her life in Nagasaki after the Second World War.There are various images in the novel,which represent unique Japanese and British cultures.In order to expand the translation studies on Ishiguro's novel,as well as promote cultural exchanges through excellent diasporic literature,the author carries out a descriptive study on the translation of images in two Chinese translations of A Pale View of Hills with case analysis based on the theory of Palmer's cultural linguistics.Palmer is an American linguistic anthropologist who established the theory of cultural linguistics with imagery as the core concept.He proposed the four principles for understanding images and the image-schemas of discourse scenarios,which can also be applied to translation studies.His unique view on the interrelationship between language,culture and images can also explain the influencing factors for the translation of images.Through a case study on the transmission of images and image-schemas,the author analyzes the influence of linguistic and cultural factors on the translation of images,as well as the translation strategies adopted by the two translators.It is found that: Firstly,when examining the translation of simple images in A Pale View of Hills,the four general principles for understanding images and the five image-schemas of discourse scenarios in dialogue translation are also applicable in examining the translation of images,and the two Chinese translations can basically achieve equivalent effect.Secondly,the translation of images is influenced by both linguistic and cultural factors.Thirdly,foreignization and domestication strategies are used alternatively by the two translators and the images in the novel can be basically transmitted into the context of Chinese culture. |
