| Xiong'an ecocity reports have drawn wide attention from scholars at home and abroad since the state has decided to establish in 2017.Relevant reports published by Chinese media about China' s planning and building of ecocities,which reflects our government' s ecological thoughts.Based on this,this thesis applied Martin's Appraisal System to analyze the ecocity construction news discourses.And this study will explore what kind of ecological thoughts language resources present.Appraisal System was developed by Martin in the study of interpersonal function in systemic functional linguistics.It focuses on the language resources in the discourses that express the author's attitudes,positions and stands,and examines the close relationship between language and values.As an ideal city mode that fully embodies the harmonious development of human and nature,ecocity is an important embodiment of the integration of ecological thoughts into urban construction.The sustainable,healthy,harmonious and environmentally friendly ecological thoughts run through the process of ecocity construction.The present thesis selected 50 pieces of news discourses from the official website of Global Times,Xinhua News Agency and China Daily as corpus.The time spans from 2017 to2019.It aims to study how Chinese media convey ecological ideas to society through appraisal resources through quantitative and qualitative methods.The following three research questions will be answered in this thesis:First,what kind of appraisal resources are used in Xiong'an ecocity construction news discourses?Second,what are the distribution features of the appraisal resources in Xiong'an ecocity construction news discourses?Third,what kind of ecological thoughts do these appraisal resources convey?The findings are as follows: Firstly,abundant appraisal resources are used in ecocity construction news discourses.Secondly,attitudinal resources are most frequently used in ecocity construction news discourses,which up to 84.93%.Graduation resources ranked second,which accounts for 8.90%.Engagement resources is fewer,which takes up 6.20%.Almost all the attitudinal resources are positive.Compared with attitudinal resources,engagement resources and graduation resources are fewer.Thirdly,the selection and use of appraisal resources by media reflect the sustainable,harmonious,healthy and environmentalfriendly ecological thoughts.This study enriches the application of Positive Discourse Analysis and the empirical study of appraisal system in news discourse.It provides not only a new direction for the analysis of non-political news discourses,but also some enlightenment for the writing of news. |
