Richard Strauss is one of the representative composers in the late romantic period.His symphonic poem creation mainly inherits Franz Liszt' s exploration and innovation of the genre,while the opera mainly learns and develops the creation techniques of Richard Wagner.As a German and because of his early musical education,Richard Strauss knew the rules of Mozart and Beethoven,and then in the course of his work,added his understanding of liszt and Wagner's music,and gradually developed his own unique style.About the study of Strauss' s works,Chinese and foreign scholars mostly focus on his opera and symphonic poem,for other genres of works are relatively less involved.This article mainly discusses the late Richard strauss three concertos with detailed analysis,each of them I choose one movement(the first movement of No.2 Horn Concerto,the first movement of Duet Concerto,and the third movement of Oboe Concerto),and Sonata theory will be used to deeply research this three movement and to explore validity of Sonata theory via analysis of these works.This thesis has three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The main body has five chapters,which are roughly divided into two parts: the first part is the first chapter and the second chapter,which is the background introduction of this paper;The second part is the third chapter to the fifth chapter,for specific works analysis.The first chapter is a brief introduction of the life of Richard Strauss,which involves the composing stages and specific genres of the composer,and focuses on the background of the three late works related to this paper.The second chapter is a brief introduction of the Sonata theory,including its historical origin and current development,as well as the core part of the theory.The third chapter analyzes the first movement of Richard Strauss' No.2 Horn Concerto,and discusses the rationality of tonal layout of this movement after determining the music form with the Sonata theory.The fourth chapter analyzes the first movement of Duet Concerto.This chapter aims to discuss the validity and expansion of the Sonata theory in the process of analyzing the monement.The fifth chapter analyzes the third movement of Oboe Concerto,aims to explore how Richard Strauss imitated Haydn in the form of this movement,which can be used as one of the evidences of Strauss' return to the classical tradition in his later period.This paper based on the three works of the late Richard Strauss and the use of Sonata theory,so that this paper will reveal Strauss' return to the classical tradition and his own innovation,and also discusses the applicability of the Sonata theory.Therefore,the paper will provide a point of view of late romantic works,I hope to make contributions to the researches both of Richard Strauss and Sonata form.
