On May 2nd,2018,Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, cited from the classics in Peking University,“The way of Great Learning lies in the enlightenment of brilliant virtues, the remolding of people, and the pursuit of ultimate goodness.” This is the first sentence of DaXue,and also the guiding principle of DaXue.DaXue is from the Book of Rites, which is the forty-second chapter of it.At present, there are many English versions of DaXue at home and abroad: for example, the foreign translators including Morrison,Marshman,David Collie,James Legge and Pound and so on;the domestic translators including Gu Hongming,Lin Yutang,Chan Wing-tsit and Zhai Chu and so on.This thesis selects the English versions of British sinologist James Legge and authoritative expert of “Zhu Zi Xue” Chan Wing-tsit for comparative study, because the translation of James Legge is the most representative version in the western society;Chan Wing-tsit's translation is very influential in Europe and America.Under the translation theory of hermeneutics, this thesis analyzes the translation strategies and methods of the two translators on the lexical level and the syntactic level, and I hope to be able to provide some references for the future researchers for DaXue.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part “introduction”: it discusses the research background, the research object DaXue,and the purpose and structure of this thesis. The second part “literature review”: it introduces studies of DaXue and its English versions at home and abroad. The third part “theoretical framework”: it introduces the theory of hermeneutics and the translation theory of hermeneutics. The fourth part “comparative study”: it discusses their translations on the lexical and syntactic levels, the lexical level included the titles, three cardinal guides and eight items,culture-loaded words and so on;the syntactic level included elliptical sentence, interrogative sentence, exclamatory sentence and so on.The fifth part “conclusion”: it expounds the major findings, limitations and suggestions of the thesis. It is found that under the translation theory of hermeneutics, the proportion of James Legge's translation in accordance with the translation theory of hermeneutics reaches 76.56%,and that of Chan Wing-tsit reaches 82.21%.Among them,Legge'translation reaches 80.85% on the lexical level and 70.59% on the syntactic level;Chan Wing-tsit' translation reaches 87.23% on the lexical level and 64.71% on the syntactic level. At the same time, this thesis summarizes that in the study on the lexical level, the proportion of Legge's translation in the culture-loaded words reaches 77.14%,and that of his translation in the phonetic loan characters reaches 85.71%;that of Chan Wing-tsit's translation in the phonetic loan characters reaches 71.43%,and that of his translation in the culture-loaded words reaches 80%.In the culture-loaded words, the proportion of Legge's translation reaches 60% in “history and geography”,and reaches 33.33% in the polysemy words;and that of Chan Wing-tsit's translation reaches 60% in “history and geography”,and reaches 66.67% in the polysemy words. And Chan Wing-tsit's compensation rate for the culture-loaded words is very low,and the compensation rate for the books and polysemy words is 0.On the syntactic level, the mistranslation of Chan Wing-tsit's translation is in the coordinate sentence, while that of James Legge's translation is in the sentences quoted from other books in DaXue.In view of the above phenomena, the thesis summarizes the following reasons: the differences between Chinese culture and western culture;the translator's factors, including the translator's choice of translation strategies and the misunderstanding of the original text and so on.Finally, the thesis explores the strategies and methods that should be adopted in translation of classics and tries to broaden the view of the study of the English version of DaXue.
