| This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the subtitles in five medical videos provided by the Meducal platform. As the style of a visual text is different from that of other texts,it is advisable to pick up a suitable theory as a guideline in translating.Toury’s Translational Norm Theory proves helpful in the translation of the subtitles in these medical educational videos. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One introduces the translation task and the significance of the research.Chapter Two describes some preparation work such as making an analysis of the source visual texts in relation of lexicon and syntax.Chapter Three introduces the theoretical foundation of this report—Toury’s Translational Norm Theory, which is composed of three parts: initial norm, preliminary norms and operational norms. With Toury’s operational norms as guidelines,Chapter Four discusses how to translate the subtitles in these five video clips on medicine as a case study on the lexical and syntactical level. The final chapter summarizes the experience the author got and the lessons she learned through this translation task.As for medical terms, literal translation, zero translation and standardization are recommended during the translation.Consulting parallel text and corpora can help guarantee standardized translation. As for the semi-medical words, the exact meaning of a word can be determined in line with the context. At the syntactical level, division, omission, addition, combination and linear translation can be applied for translating long and complex sentences after segmentation due to the time and space constraints of subtitles. The passive sentences can be translated into Chinese passive sentences, active sentences or non-subject sentences. |
