“Modernity” is an important feature of French poetry and painting in the 19 th century.The poetry and painting of the modernist school in France have been concerned by the academic circle for a long time because of their distinct appearance from traditional aesthetics,but the research on the relationship between poetry and painting of the modernist school has not been fully carried out yet.The development of literature and art in the 19 th century derived from the reflection of aesthetic modernity on the modernization of capitalist society.Therefore,social politics,economy and science have endowed the works with a distinctive brand of the times.Social factors have an overall impact on literary and artistic creation,while some new changes have a real impact on the development of the relationship between poetry and painting.Beyond the social dimension,some new trends have emerged in the development of literature and art itself.In the process of “reproduction” to “expression”,poetry and painting form a unity through a combination of the theme of landscape and lyric spirit.Domestic researchers generally regard Laocoon published in the 18 th century as an important theory that established the heterogeneous relationship.But there is a distance between theory and practice.Poetry and painting are closer and sometimes farther away in the subjective choices of different poets and painters,and are more closely related after the 19 th century.The second half of the 19 th century is a crucial period in the development of the relationship between poetry and painting,symbolism in literature entering impressionist painting and impressionism as well as post impressionism in painting incorporated into some literature works so that literature and painting not only learning from each other in themes,but poetry having the characteristics of visualization and painting produced with a strong poetic quality.Although in this large historical range,the development of poetry and painting is not completely synchronized,from the perspective of the respective development of poetry and painting,it is typical that Rimbaud and Gauguin were in the transitional period of the integration of poetry and painting.Rimbaud's color concept has always been the attention of researchers,but his color concept is not only impressionist,but also the product of mystery and imagination.From this angle,his color is more consistent with Gauguin's.In addition,his poetry also contains the concept of space in painting.Gauguin is often seen as a pioneer in introducing literary symbolism into painting,whose poetic composition,image and color distinguish him from other contemporary painters.The reference of techniques is the specific form of poetic and painting fusion,while the similarity of aesthetic pursuit represents the deep logic of the process.To be specific,the comparison between Rimbaud and Gauguin shows that both of them were creators who turned to the inner world at an earlier stage and sought the inner reality through imagination.They were able to construct a reasonable space through subjective imagination.They combined the creation techniques of poetry and painting with advanced creation ideas,which had an echo on some later creators and indirectly influenced the development of surrealism.
