Georg G.Iggers(1926-2017)was the most famous historian in the modern world.He made a unique analysis and generalization of the trend of historical research in the world from the 18 th century to the 20 th century,especially in Europe and America.In the face of several major turns in the historiography study of European and American in the 20 th century,he always stuck to the historical concept of Enlightenment and progress and the "objectivity" foundation of historiography research.In addition,Iggers' historical research was full of social responsibility,not only for the concern of global historians,but also for his pursuit of world justice.This paper made an analysis of the whole historical research of Iggers and summarized two characteristics of his historical research: transcendence and connection.Transcendence lay in his transcendence of vision,and at the same time,he didn't adhere to his own ideas limited by the current academic trend of thought.The Connection lay in the application of his comparative method and cross-cultural method,as well as the integration of historiography into the study of social history and the construction of historical research community.Through the analysis on the holistic historiography of Iggers,this paper defined Iggers as a real historian with international vision and influence in contemporary society.This paper consists of four chapters.The introduction part explained the reasons for the topic,the research ideas and methods,and focused on the assessment of the research status of Iggers at China and foreign,including the evaluation of his thoughts and methods of historical research and the evaluation of his overall career as a historian and social activist.The first chapter defined Iggers as a "true citizen of the world" from the three identities of exile,historian and social activist.From the identity of exile,the world view and identity of self that Iggers inherent were derived.This part described in detail Iggers' life as a historian from three aspects: his academic origins,academic achievements and academic activities.Iggers' identity as a social activist also helps to understand his overall thinking and historical research.Chapter two discussed in detail Iggers' conception of historiography,and summarizes thecharacteristic of his conception of historiography: "transcendence".First was Iggers can transcend popular historiographical idea,stuck to the conception of Enlightenment history progress,stuck to the objectivity of history,and the ability to transcend traditional research concept,to redefine the nature of history as a discipline that "reconstruction based on the fact",and historical studies as part of the social,not just as a thought.The third chapter was on the use of the Iggers were historical research methods characteristics of "connection",including comparative historical research method and the research on the history of a global horizon,and Iggers' method of construction of historical research community in the whole society background,including its historical studies for the "historiographical community" in the works of narrative with him physically for national historian a big contribution.The fourth chapter is to evaluate the whole historical practice of Iggers and summarize its influence.Iggers' overall historical studies had its positive significance and shortcomings,but in spite of his flaws,had the characteristic of the "transcendence and connection" Iggers of some theories and methods in the study of historiography wasput forward and try,in today's international development of historical studies also have influence,and combining with the Iggers to promote international historians jointly conducted by the positive action,enough to call Iggers contemporary society truly with global vision and humanistic care expert in historical studies.
